Jersey Rheumatology
Rheumatology is a branch of medicine that deals with the investigation, diagnosis and management of problems that involve bones, muscle, joints and tendons (tissue that connects muscle to bone or other skeletal tissues). Many of the problems we deal with occur because of problems with the immune system (autoimmunity).
What we do
Jersey Rheumatology provides a comprehensive general and specialist rheumatology service to the local population.
We diagnose and treat conditions:
- Inflammatory arthritis (including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and seronegative spondyloarthropathies).
- Crystal arthritis (including gout).
- Osteoarthritis.
- Connective tissue diseases such as lupus, scleroderma, myositis and other.
- Vasculitis.
- Osteoporosis.
- Soft tissue rheumatology.
- Management of pregnant women with rheumatic disease, including pre-pregnancy counselling.
Procedures/treatments:
- Joint Injection.
- Soft Tissue Injection.
Who we are:
Dr. Tosounidou is a Consultant Rheumatologist with a specialist interest in lupus and other connective tissue disorders. She completed her Rheumatology and General Internal Medicine training in the West Midlands in 2014. After completing specialist training, Dr Tosounidou worked as a post-CCT clinical research fellow for 2 years to gain further expertise in the management of connective tissue disorders such as lupus and continued with her subspecialty interest in the management of rheumatic disease in pregnancy. Dr Tosounidou was appointed Consultant Rheumatologist at Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust in November 2016.
Dr. Tosounidou has a keen research interest and has actively led and supported several observational/epidemiological studies and clinical trials in lupus and Behcet’s syndrome.
Dr. Tosounidou has published peer-reviewed papers and book chapters on her area of research and expertise. Dr Tosounidou was a member of the guideline-working group for updating the British Society of Rheumatology (BSR) guideline on prescribing anti-rheumatic medications in pregnancy and breastfeeding, published in November 2022.
Dr. Tosounidou moved with her family to Jersey in 2023 and has become the new Head of the Rheumatology department since July 2023.

Results
Your Rheumatology Consultant, in a letter addressed to your GP, a copy of which you will receive, will report blood tests and scan results. We cannot discuss scan results over the phone.
